The Phalaenopsis Purple Martin var. blue is a sought-after novelty hybrid, prized for its violet-blue flowers and sweet, fruity fragrance inherited from its Phalaenopsis violacea parent . Registered in 1989 by H. Wallbrunn, this Taiwanese import is only slightly more demanding than standard Phalaenopsis – it simply prefers warmer temperatures (21-29°C days) and appreciates consistent humidity . Grow in sphagnum or bark with bright, indirect light (east-facing window ideal), watering when the medium is nearly dry . The 'blue' colour form is rare and highly collectable, with flowers typically appearing in spring to summer . While true blue remains elusive in orchids, the deep violet-purple hues of this hybrid are among the closest approximations .
