The Robiquetia merrillii (also known as Robiquetia cerina) is a fascinating Philippine endemic orchid nicknamed the 'Pineapple Orchid' for its dense, pendant clusters of small bell-shaped flowers that resemble a tropical fruit. Despite its rare, collector's item status, this orchid is surprisingly adaptable – it grows naturally from 350m to over 3,000m elevation and tolerates a wide temperature range (15-32°C days). The intermediate skill rating simply reflects its need for consistent high humidity (70-90%) and good air movement – not complicated care. Grow it mounted on cork or in a slatted basket to accommodate its pendant flower spikes, which bloom in late summer with sequential purple-red flowers. The fine root system is the key to success: water regularly but never let roots stay soggy, and avoid letting them dry out completely. A striking conversation piece for any collection!
