The Cattleya (Laelia) purpurata var. striata × sib is a sibling cross of one of Brazil's most iconic orchid species, the "Queen of Cattleyas." It produces 10–17cm fragrant flowers with distinctive purple/pink striations (stripes) on the petals and sepals, plus a deep purple lip . This intermediate-level orchid is native to Brazil's coastal swampy plains and requires very bright light — almost full sun — to bloom. Many growers report that it "refuses to bloom" in light shade . Provide a winter dry rest (reduce watering to every 14–21 days after pseudobulbs mature) to trigger spring flowering . Water thoroughly every 5–7 days during active growth, allowing the coarse bark mix to approach dryness between waterings . Maintain 55–75% humidity with strong air movement to prevent rot . As a sibling cross, each plant is genetically unique — expect variation in flower colour and striation intensity . This species has declined in the wild due to historical over-collection, making cultivated specimens increasingly valuable .
