The Catasetum gnomus 'Jumbo' is a charming compact orchid producing 4-5cm flowers resembling gnome hats in green-yellow with burgundy spotting. This Brazilian/Peruvian species thrives in warm 26-32°C (79-90°F) summer conditions with high humidity (70-85%), requiring daily watering when its white roots appear. Unlike most Catasetums, it has a shorter 2-3 month dormancy period where it should be kept completely dry at 18-21°C (64-70°F). Grow in an extra coarse bark mix to prevent rot, providing bright light (4,000-6,000 lux) during active growth. Its musky-spicy fragrance intensifies at dusk during late summer blooms. While compact (15-25cm pseudobulbs), the 'Jumbo' form produces larger flowers than the standard species, making it ideal for growers with limited space.
