Bare roots
The Rhynchostylis retusa, commonly called the foxtail orchid, is a spectacular Southeast Asian species producing 30-45cm pendulous flower spikes densely packed with fragrant white blooms. This large orchid (40-60cm leaves) thrives in warm, humid conditions (20-30°C, 70-85% humidity) and must be grown bare-root mounted or in slatted baskets to accommodate its extensive aerial roots. Water daily in summer, allowing roots to dry slightly between soakings, and provide bright filtered light (3,000-5,000 lux). Its intoxicating citrus-spice fragrance peaks at night during winter blooms, with flowers lasting a month under proper care. While uncommon in small collections due to its size requirements, it makes a magnificent statement piece for experienced growers.
