The Anoectochilus roxburghii 'Hayata' (Thick Stem Large Leaves) is a Japanese-selected jewel orchid prized for its velvet black foliage with electric gold veining and unusually robust stems. This trophy-status plant demands ultra-high humidity (85-95%) in sealed terrariums with minimal light (500-800 lux) to maintain leaf colour. Grow surface-mounted on living sphagnum moss, keeping temperatures 20-25°C in summer with a slight winter cooldown. Unlike typical jewel orchids, this variety's thick rhizomes store water for drought resilience, though it should never dry completely. With fewer than three commercial sources worldwide, it represents the pinnacle of foliage orchid collecting, though its small white autumn flowers are secondary to the spectacular leaves.
These care guidelines are based on general information and may need adjustments based on your specific growing conditions and the needs of your individual plant.
