The Goodyera hispida is an exceptionally rare Himalayan jewel orchid, prized for its velvety, silver-veined leaves covered in delicate hairs and 25cm flowering spikes. This alpine specialist thrives in cold 15-22°C summers with winter temperatures near freezing (2-5°C), requiring a living moss substrate over limestone to mimic its natural habitat. Unlike tropical Goodyeras, it demands strong air movement despite high humidity (70-85%) to prevent rot in its moisture-trapping hairy foliage. With fewer than 10 commercial sources worldwide and 1-2 leaf growth per year, it represents the ultimate challenge for jewel orchid enthusiasts. Flowering occurs after 5+ years of careful cultivation, producing ghostly white blooms that contrast dramatically with its near-black foliage.
