The Ludisia discolor var. alba is the striking albino form of the popular jewel orchid, prized for its light green, velvety leaves with silvery-white veins that differ from the darker standard form . Native to Southeast Asia, this terrestrial orchid is one of the few orchids grown primarily for its attractive foliage rather than its flowers . The var. alba produces small white flowers with twisted yellow columns on upright 10-14 inch spikes in autumn and winter . It is considered beginner to intermediate in difficulty — while the species is generally forgiving, the albino form is slightly trickier to grow than the standard dark variety and more sensitive to direct light . Grow in low to bright indirect light (400-800 foot-candles) with consistent moisture and 70% humidity for best results . Because of its sensitivity, it should be kept in understory conditions within terrariums, shaded by taller plants . Like other jewel orchids, it is susceptible to snails and slugs in terrarium settings . This rare albino variant is a highly sought-after collector's plant.
