The Phalaenopsis tetraspis 'Fire' is a sought-after species clone prized for its 4-5cm white flowers with vivid red horizontal barring – the 'Fire' clone is known for exceptionally intense colouration. Unlike common hybrid Phals, this species demands consistent warmth (never below 15°C) and high humidity (60-80%+). It's often described as "finicky" by beginners, but the reality is simple: keep it warm and humid, and it thrives.
Native to lowland Southeast Asian forests, this warmth-loving Phal performs best mounted on cork or in slotted baskets due to its pendulous growth habit. If mounted, water daily; if potted, use chunky bark and allow the medium to approach dryness between waterings.
The flowers emit a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley, though the scent only appears 4-5 days after blooming. Flowering peaks in spring to summer, with individual blooms lasting 10-30 days.
While intermediate in skill level (simply because it's less tolerant of cool temperatures and dry air than hybrid Phals), this species rewards consistent care with stunning, uniquely patterned blooms and a delightful fragrance.
