The Platycerium willinckii, commonly known as the Java Staghorn Fern, is a striking epiphyte native to the rainforests of Java, Indonesia . The intermediate skill level simply reflects that it grows on wood, not in soil – once mounted correctly, care is straightforward. This fern produces two distinct frond types: round, brown shield fronds that anchor the plant to its mount, and dramatic silvery-green fertile fronds that cascade outward like antlers, reaching 40-60cm in length . Thriving in 18-28°C temperatures with bright indirect light, it requires weekly soaking (10-15 minutes) during summer and less frequent watering in winter . Unlike flowering plants, it reproduces by spores that develop on the undersides of mature fronds after 2-3 years. Completely pet-friendly and non-toxic, this fern makes an impressive living wall sculpture in homes with good natural light – bathrooms with windows are particularly suitable due to naturally higher humidity
These care guidelines are based on general information and may need adjustments based on your specific growing conditions and the needs of your individual plant.
